Haulover Canal Fishing

6.9· Backwater · Brevard County, FL

Free: No charge to fish from the bank; the boat launch needs a refuge pass (checked Sep 27, 2026)

Haulover Canal cuts across the north end of Merritt Island to join the Indian River Lagoon and Mosquito Lagoon, and it runs through Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge, which names it as one of its bank-fishing spots for daytime anglers. Water moves through the canal as the wind pushes it between the two lagoons, and that current draws spotted seatrout, redfish and black drum, with flounder, sheepshead, jacks and ladyfish in their seasons and the chance of a rolling tarpon in summer. Anglers cast from the banks and the pull-offs along the road into Bairs Cove, beside the Kennedy Parkway bridge. Live shrimp, soft plastics and cut bait all work. The refuge is open sunrise to sunset and bank fishing after dark is not allowed. Watch for boat traffic in the channel, manatees, lightning and slippery banks.
