Vaill Point Park Fishing

Vaill Point Park is a 23-acre St. Johns County park on tidal Moultrie Creek in the St. Augustine Shores area south of the city, with a fishing pier, a dock, nature trails, a playscape and restrooms. The pier sits at the park's northern tip, over the creek, where it winds through salt marsh toward the Matanzas River, and its grassy edges hold redfish, spotted seatrout, flounder and black drum, with sheepshead around pilings in winter and snapper, jacks and ladyfish in summer. A shrimp under a float along the grass, or a mud minnow bumped along the bottom, catches most of them, and the falling tide, when bait drains out of the marsh, is the classic time to fish. The park keeps dawn-to-dusk hours. Its trails and picnic pavilion make it a pleasant family stop; bring repellent for the marsh insects.
