Canova Beach Park Fishing

Canova Beach Park is a county beach park in Indian Harbour Beach where surf fishing, beach walks and leashed dogs all share the sand.

• Spring (Mar-May): Spanish mackerel and bluefish passing north, pompano and whiting in the troughs
• Summer (Jun-Aug): early-morning snook, whiting and croaker, ladyfish in the wash
• Fall (Sep-Nov): mullet schools draw crevalle jacks, tarpon, redfish and snook into casting range

A medium surf rod and a lighter spinning rod cover the beach; keep bait in a lidded bucket with dogs about.

• Whiting: clam or shrimp on a light two-hook rig in the near trough
• Pompano: sand fleas on a float rig cast to the outer trough
• Spanish mackerel: a small metal jig worked fast when birds dive beyond the bar
• Redfish: cut mullet on a fish-finder rig in the fall
• Keep hooks, sinkers and bait off the open sand where dogs can reach them

Tides here follow the Atlantic pattern of two highs and two lows a day.

• Have baits in the water through the flooding tide
• Look for the darker water of a trough just behind the shore break
• Seas too rough for comfortable swimming can still fish well for pompano and bluefish
• Early mornings are cooler and quieter, with fewer walkers on the sand
• Summer afternoons bring thunderstorms; plan to leave before they arrive
