Dutton Island Preserve is the City of Atlantic Beach's largest park: a wooded island in the salt marsh on the east side of the Intracoastal Waterway, with 9,000 feet of nature trails, a canoe and kayak launch, pavilions, campsites and a fishing and viewing pier that reaches out over a tidal creek at the island's north end. It is a scenic place to fish the marsh for redfish, seatrout and flounder, with sheepshead and black drum in the cooler months and croaker, jacks and ladyfish in summer. Fish live shrimp under a cork or mud minnows on the bottom as the tide drains the marsh. The city lists hours of 8 a.m. to dusk and warns that king tides can flood the road and close the park. Bring insect repellent, and leave at the first thunder.
