Bear Point Sanctuary Fishing

Bear Point Sanctuary is a mangrove-lined preserve on the Indian River Lagoon side of South Hutchinson Island, south of Fort Pierce, managed by St. Lucie County's Mosquito Control District. An unpaved dike trail of about a mile leads to a raised viewing tower, a picnic pavilion and a 450-foot fishing pier that runs out over the lagoon flats, and the county also invites anglers to fish along the impoundment. Close to the Fort Pierce Inlet, the lagoon here gets clean water and good bait: snook, seatrout, redfish and jacks in the warm months, sheepshead, black drum and the odd pompano when it cools. Fish the moving tide early and late. Expect a walk of about half a mile to the pier, little shade and no restrooms, and leave at the first sign of lightning.
