John Brooks Park Beachside Fishing

John Brooks Park Beachside opens a 226-acre St. Lucie County preserve to the Atlantic on South Hutchinson Island, a few miles south of Fort Pierce Inlet, and the county describes its two miles of beachfront dunes as a place for seashore fishing. A single wooden crossover, ramped and topped by a covered viewing area, climbs the dune from a small lot, which makes the trip over with a loaded cart easy. Look down from the platform for birds and bait before you choose a trough. Pompano, whiting and bluefish carry the cool months, and the fall mullet run brings snook, jacks, redfish and blacktip sharks within reach. The park keeps dawn-to-dusk hours and has no restrooms and no lifeguards, so bring water and fish with care.
