Argosy Park Beach Access, Ormond Beach Fishing

Argosy Park Beach Access is a quiet county walkover onto the Atlantic surf in Ormond Beach, with a parking lot close at hand. It has no pier or structure, so the fishing is classic open-beach surf casting.

Surf fishing on this stretch follows the usual Volusia pattern of whiting and pompano, with other fish by season.

• Spring (Mar-May): pompano and whiting move along the beach, with a few bluefish
• Summer (Jun-Aug): whiting are the dependable catch, with jacks, ladyfish and rays
• Fall (Sep-Nov): pompano again, redfish and black drum, and mullet moving down the beach
• Winter (Dec-Feb): whiting, bluefish and black drum, with the odd flounder in calm weather

Surf rods around 9 to 12 feet and 15 to 20 lb line are typical on this coast.

• Whiting and pompano: a two-hook bottom rig with small hooks, baited with sand fleas or small pieces of fresh or frozen shrimp
• Pompano: a small jig bounced in the wash, or a sand flea on a short leader
• Drum and redfish: cut mullet or crab on a fish-finder rig with a pyramid sinker
• Bluefish: cut bait or a metal spoon cast beyond the breakers
• Use a sand spike for the rod and a beach cart for the walkover

The Atlantic here has two highs and two lows a day, and the shape of the beach changes through each tide.

• Check the beach at low tide for troughs behind the bars
• Early morning and dusk are the quietest and best-biting hours
• Light wind and clearer water fish best; a strong onshore wind and surge cloud the water
• Cooler fronts in fall and winter often bring bluefish and drum

This is an open surf beach, so the sea, traffic and weather deserve respect.
