Val M. Steele Park, formerly Coconut Point Park, is a 36.9-acre Brevard County beach park on A1A south of the town of Melbourne Beach that the county keeps natural and calls popular for surfing, beachcombing and fishing. The beach is long, unguarded and a sea turtle nesting site, so the best approach is to walk it: carry a light rod and a pouch of jigs to find the troughs holding pompano and whiting in the cooler months, look for snook along the edge of the first trough on summer mornings, and join the fall mullet run when bluefish, jacks, redfish and tarpon push along the beach. Sand fleas take the pompano; a swimbait does the rest. The tide rises and falls twice a day. Restrooms, outdoor showers, a picnic shelter and two crossovers, one wheelchair accessible, serve the park, which opens dawn to dusk. Watch for rip currents and surfers.
