South City Beach Park, Hallandale Beach Fishing

South City Beach Park, Hallandale Beach is a city park completed under Hallandale Beach's parks master plan, set among condominiums near the south end of Broward County's coast. For an angler it is a convenient base for short early or late sessions.

• Pull in nose first; back-in parking is prohibited in city park lots
• Metered street parking is also available near the city's beach parks
• Paths lead from the park through the dune to a wide public beach
• City parks close from sunset to sunrise, and the city applies its park rules to the public beach, so plan to fish in daylight

Expect the standard South Florida surf mix, with the best bottom fishing in the cooler months.

• Spring (Mar-May): Spanish mackerel and blue runners on bait schools, with pompano in the trough into April
• Summer (Jun-Aug): snook cruising the first trough early in the morning, plus jacks and ladyfish
• Fall (Sep-Nov): the mullet run pulls snook, jacks, bluefish and the occasional tarpon close to the sand
• Winter (Dec-Feb): pompano and whiting on calm, clear mornings, and bluefish behind cold fronts

Travel light: the fishing windows are short and the walk crosses soft sand.

• Pompano and whiting: a two-hook rig with a 2 to 3 oz pyramid sinker in the first trough, baited with bought sand fleas, clam or peeled shrimp
• Snook: a white bucktail, a small swimbait or a live pilchard worked along the trough soon after sunrise
• Blue runners, jacks and mackerel: a small spoon or jig on a light leader, thrown at bait
• Bluefish: add a short wire leader in winter
• A 9-foot rod with 12 to 15 lb line handles almost everything here

Two highs and two lows a day come through; NOAA's Newport Fishing Pier station, a few miles south, predicts ranges of roughly 2 to 3 feet.

• A rising tide around sunrise is the pick, because it falls inside the unrestricted early hours
• Evening sessions after 6 p.m. are best in summer, when daylight lasts
• Calm, clear water after a few days of light wind is ideal for pompano
• A strong east wind brings weed and a hard shore break
• Summer storms often build over the mainland in the afternoon

The beach is guarded by day and shared with swimmers, so fish with them in mind.

• Lifeguards are on duty from mid-morning until 5 p.m. in winter and into the evening in summer; the city's two pages give slightly different times
• Keep every cast clear of swimmers and stay out of the restricted swimming areas from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.
• Rip currents form along this coast; do not wade beyond knee depth
• Lightning: leave the sand at the first thunder
• Access: the park is listed as ADA accessible, and beach wheelchairs are lent by application at Towers 1 and 2 during guarded hours

• Set up away from the lifeguard towers and chair rentals to keep clear of swimmers
• Take everything home; the city treats items left on the beach overnight as abandoned

• Fishing in the restricted swim areas is prohibited from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.
• City code closes city parks from sunset to sunrise and applies park rules to the public beach unless the beach rules say otherwise
• No animals, alcohol, spearfishing or overnight camping on the beach; smoking and vaping are banned in parks and on beaches

• A Florida saltwater fishing license is required unless you are exempt
