Gasparilla Island State Park Fishing

Gasparilla Island State Park gives shore anglers a public foothold on Boca Grande Pass, the deep channel between Gasparilla Island and Cayo Costa that funnels Charlotte Harbor's tide into the Gulf.

The park covers the south end of Gasparilla Island in Boca Grande, reached over the Boca Grande Causeway, which has a toll. The main south entrance is on Belcher Road near the lighthouse.

• Entry: $3 per vehicle, paid by QR code, and $2 for pedestrians and cyclists, according to Florida State Parks; the Lee County annual parking pass is not accepted
• Hours: 8 a.m. to sundown
• Parking: five beach parking areas along the southwest tip of the island, including the Range Light, Sea Grape and Sea Wall areas between the Range Light and the lighthouse, and the lots at the south end
• The south end, including its parking lot, reopened in October 2025 after a beach renourishment closure
• The walk: short paths from each lot onto the sand

Boca Grande Pass pulls fish from Charlotte Harbor and the Gulf past the island's tip on every tide.

• Spring (Mar-May): pompano and whiting on the beach, Spanish mackerel and jacks with the bait, and the first tarpon arriving in the pass
• Summer (Jun-Aug): snook along the beach and the pass edge, tarpon rolling in the pass, blacktip sharks, ladyfish
• Fall (Sep-Nov): redfish and snook feeding before winter, the fall run of mackerel and pompano
• Winter (Dec-Feb): sheepshead around the rocks and seawall, whiting on the beach between cold fronts

Bring enough rod to handle big fish in strong current.

• Snook and reds: a 7 to 8-foot medium-heavy rod, 20 to 30 lb braid and a 40 lb leader; live pinfish, pilchards or shrimp, or a white bucktail jig
• Pompano and whiting: a surf rod with a pompano rig, sand fleas or shrimp and a 3 to 4 oz sinker to hold in the current
• Spanish mackerel and jacks: spoons and jigs retrieved fast through the bait
• Sharks: cut bait on heavy tackle, only with the free FWC shore-based shark permit
• Tarpon: shore hookups are uncommon; if one takes, keep it in the water and release it quickly

Tides here are mixed, usually two uneven highs and lows a day, and the range is small, but the volume of water moving through the pass makes the current fierce.

• The outgoing tide pulls bait out of the harbor and is usually best at the tip
• Fish the edges of the current and the eddies, not the main flow
• Slack water is short; use it to fish the bottom near the point
• The first hours after the gate opens and the last hours before sundown are best in summer
• After heavy rain the harbor runs dark and tea-colored on the outgoing tide
• The tarpon fleet crowds the pass in late spring and early summer; expect wakes

The beach is gentle but the pass is not.

• Currents in Boca Grande Pass are strong and the water drops off steeply; do not wade off the point or swim near the pass
• Heavy boat traffic in tarpon season throws big wakes onto the shore
• Summer thunderstorms build fast; leave the beach at the first thunder
• Shuffle your feet when wading to avoid stingrays
• Repairs continued into 2026, including work at the lighthouse and dune restoration; stay on the marked paths and out of roped-off dunes
• The visitor bureau lists accessible parking and restrooms, and free beach wheelchairs at the park office

Facilities have come back in stages since Hurricane Milton in 2024.

• Florida State Parks lists restrooms, a shower station and picnic pavilions at the Sandspur and lighthouse lots; the visitor bureau also lists charcoal grills and hiking trails
• The Port Boca Grande Lighthouse and its museum at the south end are open to the public; check the museum's hours before planning around it
• The visitor bureau lists no food concession and no pier, and no bait sales were confirmed; bring bait, ice and water
• Pets are not allowed on the beach
• No lifeguards

• Arrive early in tarpon season; the island is busy and the lots fill
• Check the tide chart and plan to fish the outgoing tide at the tip
• Walk the Gulf beach north toward the Range Light for more room to surf fish away from the pass
• Keep a heavy leader; big snook, jacks and sharks cruise the pass edge
• Watch the tarpon boats for where the fish are moving, but give them room
• Outside the park, Boca Grande's streets have strict parking rules, so park in the state park lots

Florida State Parks manages the park, with support from the Barrier Island Parks Society.

• Open 8 a.m. to sundown; the per-vehicle entry fee applies
• No pets on the beach; follow posted state park rules and stay out of closed areas
• A Florida saltwater fishing license is required unless an exemption applies
• Shore-based shark fishing needs the free FWC permit
• Tarpon have special release rules: check FWC
