Fishing in Lee County

Summary

Lee County takes in Southwest Florida's most famous inshore waters: Pine Island Sound, Matlacha Pass, San Carlos Bay, Estero Bay and the barrier islands of Gasparilla (Boca Grande), Captiva, Sanibel, Estero (Fort Myers Beach) and Bonita Beach. Anglers come for snook, redfish and trout in the sounds, the world-famous tarpon run at Boca Grande Pass from about May to July, winter sheepshead on every bridge, and pompano and Spanish mackerel in the passes. Hurricane Ian (2022) did enormous damage here and Helene and Milton (2024) followed; the Fort Myers Beach Pier and the Sanibel Lighthouse pier are still being rebuilt, but the Sanibel Causeway islands, Blind Pass, the Matlacha Bridge and Bowditch Point are open.

Sanibel & Captiva

  • Tides are small and often mixed, but the passes (Boca Grande, Captiva, Blind, Matanzas) and bridges constrict them into strong current.
  • Fish the first hours of the outgoing tide at passes and bridges; slack water suits bottom fishing.
  • Light east winds bring clean water to the Gulf beaches; a west wind means fishing the sheltered bay sides.
  • Summer rain freshens the upper sounds and the Caloosahatchee, pushing fish seaward.
  • Red tide has hit Lee County badly in some years; check FWC's red tide status first.

  • Lightning: summer afternoon storms build fast over the sounds.

  • Arrive early at Sanibel lots; paid spaces fill fast in season.
  • Carry drinking water; many parks still have temporary facilities.
