Bean Point Fishing

6.8· Beach · Anna Maria, FL

Bean Point is the sandy northern tip of Anna Maria Island, where Tampa Bay meets the Gulf across Passage Key Inlet. The tide rips around the point and over the bars, so it is a local favorite for snook along the beach in summer, Spanish mackerel and bluefish when bait pushes out of the bay, pompano and whiting in the troughs, and redfish and tarpon passing the point. Fish a moving tide, especially the outgoing in the morning. Homeowners own the dry sand, so reach the beach by the public accesses off North Shore Drive and fish from the wet sand. Parking is scarce and strictly enforced, and parking between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. is a violation. The currents have drowned several swimmers, so never wade out, and watch for summer lightning.
