Egmont Key State Park Fishing

6.7· Beach · Anna Maria, FL

Free: No park entry fee; getting there needs a boat or paid ferry (checked Sep 27, 2026)

Egmont Key is a wild, boat-only island at the mouth of Tampa Bay, a state park and national wildlife refuge with an 1858 lighthouse and the ruins of Fort Dade, whose structures are all closed to the public. Florida State Parks allows fishing in designated areas only, and the park map shows them on the Gulf beach and the bay beach of the island's northern half. The park names spotted seatrout, tarpon, snook, grouper, snapper and flounder, and the surf adds pompano, Spanish mackerel, whiting and jacks in season. Many visitors arrive on a commercial ferry from Fort De Soto, so plan the day around its schedule. NOAA's Egmont Key station shows two highs and two lows on most days. There is no drinking water, no restroom and no store, pets are not allowed, and the south end and other posted beaches are closed as bird sanctuaries.
