Neal Preserve Fishing

5.8· Flats · Holmes Beach, FL

Neal Preserve is a 120-acre Manatee County preserve on Perico Island, on the south side of Manatee Avenue just east of the Anna Maria Island Bridge, where boardwalks and a shell trail wind through mangroves to the edge of the bay. The county lists fishing access here, and it suits a quiet, light-tackle session: redfish, snook and spotted seatrout work the mangrove edges and grass flats, sheepshead and black drum nose along the shoreline in the cooler months, and ladyfish and jacks chase bait when the water is warm. Fish the higher half of a moving tide with a shrimp under a popping cork, a soft plastic or a small gold spoon. It is a nature preserve first: no pets or bikes on the trails, a single portable restroom, and it closes at sunset.
