Mickler's Landing is a St. Johns County beachfront park in Ponte Vedra Beach whose pink coquina-sand beach lies beyond dunes about 20 feet high, crossed by a wooden walkway built to be handicapped friendly. The place has a fishing past: in the 1930s the Mickler family and their neighbors built a 600-foot pier nearby. Today anglers fish the open surf from the sand for whiting and pompano from fall to spring, bluefish on the migrations, redfish and drum in the cool months, and Spanish mackerel in summer. Fresh shrimp and sand fleas on small hooks are the everyday baits, worked on a rising tide. The park is open dawn to dusk and has a large lot, restrooms, showers, changing rooms and a pavilion. A lifeguard tower is staffed in summer, so fish early or late and well clear of swimmers, and mind the rip currents.
