GTM Research Reserve Beach Fishing

Fee to fish: Reserve parking fee per vehicle, or lower on foot/bike (checked Sep 27, 2026)

The GTM Research Reserve Beach is the ocean edge of the Guana Tolomato Matanzas National Estuarine Research Reserve, reached from paid lots on A1A between Ponte Vedra Beach and the Guana River Road turn. You park, cross the highway on foot and follow a dune walkover to a coquina sand beach with no lifeguards; this pin is at the south lot, the one the reserve lists as wheelchair accessible. Surf anglers come for whiting and pompano, with bluefish on their migrations, redfish and black drum through the colder months, and Spanish mackerel in summer. A dropper rig baited with sand fleas or shrimp does most of the work while the tide floods. The lots open from 8 a.m. until sunset for a $3 vehicle fee. Take care crossing A1A, watch for rip currents, and leave the shark gear at home: St. Johns County bans shark fishing from its beaches.
