San Marcos de Apalache Historic State Park Fishing

6.0· Backwater · St. Marks, FL

Free: No park entrance fee; museum charges a separate small fee (checked Sep 27, 2026)

San Marcos de Apalache Historic State Park sits in the town of St. Marks on Tucker's Point, where the spring-fed Wakulla River joins the St. Marks River before both run out to Apalachee Bay. The park itself calls the point an excellent spot for fishing: redfish, speckled trout and sheepshead move between the bay and the rivers here, with black drum, flounder and summer jacks and ladyfish as well. Live shrimp under a cork or on a light bottom rig covers most of it. Fish a moving tide: most days bring two uneven highs and lows, and the current they push past the point matters more than the height. Entry is free (the museum charges a small fee), but the park is open only from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Thursday to Monday. Watch for boat traffic, slick footing at the water's edge and summer lightning.
