St. Marks Lighthouse Fishing

6.1· Flats · Wakulla County, FL

Fee to fish: Refuge entrance fee per vehicle, walker or cyclist (checked Sep 27, 2026)

The shoreline around the St. Marks Lighthouse sits at the very end of Lighthouse Road inside St. Marks National Wildlife Refuge, where the refuge marsh meets the open grass flats of Apalachee Bay. Anglers fish from the rock-lined edge by the lighthouse and the tidal creeks and ditches along the road, casting soft plastics and live shrimp for redfish and speckled trout, with sheepshead and black drum on the rocks in winter and Spanish mackerel and ladyfish running the bay edge in warm months. The first two hours of the rising tide are the best, especially at dawn. Access is by car through the refuge gate (entrance fee, daylight hours only). The main hazards are a very shallow, oyster-studded bottom, summer lightning with no shelter on the point, and biting insects.
