West End Beach, Dauphin Island Fishing

West End Beach is the gateway to the wildest stretch of Dauphin Island's Gulf shore. Families settle on the beach by the entrance; anglers walk west, away from swimmers, to open sand and room to cast.

• Air-conditioned restrooms, with food and chair vendors in peak season
• No lifeguards on duty
• A long stretch of undeveloped beach to the west
• Gulf kingfish, pompano, redfish, trout and Spanish mackerel
• Dogs are not allowed on this beach

The beach is at 3000 Bienville Boulevard, where the paved road stops at the West End Beach public parking lot, a long drive west from the bridge past the stilt houses.

• Parking: a paid town beach lot, paid through the ParkMobile app during the day; one day's payment also covers the town's other beach lots
• Hours: the town lists the beach as open 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., seven days a week, weather permitting
• The walk: from the lot onto the beach, then west along the sand to fish well away from swimmers
• Petit Bois Island, across the pass at the far end, is National Park Service land reached only by boat
• The road and lot flood when storms push water over the low West End; the beach was closed for a few days after Tropical Storm Bertha in July 2026

The west end faces open Gulf water, usually cleaner than near the mouth of Mobile Bay, and the surf is a classic sandbar beach.

• Spring (Mar-May): pompano and Gulf kingfish move along the beach; redfish in the troughs
• Summer (Jun-Aug): speckled trout for waders in the morning, plus Spanish mackerel, ladyfish and bluefish chasing bait
• Fall (Sep-Nov): the redfish run peaks along the beachfront ahead of the spawn, and pompano return
• Winter (Dec-Feb): slow, with kingfish and the odd redfish on calm days

Bring two rods: a 9 to 11 foot surf rod for bottom baits and a 7-foot spinning rod for lures.

• Pompano and kingfish: a pompano rig with fresh shrimp or sand fleas and a 3 oz sinker, cast to the second trough
• Redfish: cut or whole mullet on a fish-finder rig with 20 lb line in the fall
• Trout: wade the first trough early in the day with a soft plastic or a small topwater plug
• Spanish mackerel and bluefish: a small silver spoon on a short wire or heavy mono leader
• A sand spike and a beach cart make the long walk west easier

Expect one high and one low tide on most days, with little range, so the shape of the beach matters more than the tide table; the Dauphin Island area predictions are close enough.

• Fish the deeper troughs and the cuts through the bars, where the waves break less
• A rising tide on a calm morning is a favorite time for pompano
• North winds flatten the surf and leave clear water close to shore
• Strong south winds and storms raise the surf, muddy the water and can flood the West End road
• Midday summer sun slows the bite, so fish the first hours after the beach opens or the late afternoon

The open Gulf here can be dangerous.

• The town counts rip currents among its main worries on the West End; never wade deep, and stay out of the water under double red flags
• There are no lifeguards; fish well away from swimmers
• Keep out of any roped-off bird nesting areas
• Shuffle your feet when wading to avoid stingrays
• Leave the beach at the first sign of a thunderstorm; there is no shelter on the open sand
• Storm tides can flood the low road, so do not get stranded
• Access: facilities at the entrance, then soft sand; a beach cart helps

The entrance has the island's fullest beach facilities, and the beach to the west has none.

• The paid public lot at the end of Bienville Boulevard
• No bait shop confirmed at the beach; buy bait before you drive out
• Nothing at all on the undeveloped beach to the west

• Walk west past the swimmers before you set up; the farther you go, the more room you have
• Leave the dog at home, as pets are not allowed on West End Beach
• Pick up fresh shrimp or sand fleas on the way, since bait is not confirmed at the beach
• Check the forecast for red flags and coastal flooding before you drive out
• Petit Bois Island across the pass is reachable only by boat
• Pack out everything you bring
• The beach is open 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., so plan your session inside those hours

West End Beach is one of the Town of Dauphin Island's town-owned beaches; read the posted signs at the lot for its rules.

• Open 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., weather permitting, and parking is paid
• No pets, glass, grills, fires or overnight camping
• Obey the beach flags; there are no lifeguards, so fish well away from swimmers
• No vehicles on the dunes or the beach
• An Alabama saltwater fishing license is required unless you are exempt; Alabama residents who are exempt (and anglers fishing only from a pier that holds a pier license) must still complete the free Saltwater Angler Registration. Anglers under 16 are exempt.
