Sunset Park, Mexico Beach Fishing

Sunset Park is a small City of Mexico Beach park set right on the Gulf, with picnic areas, restrooms and plenty of parking, and it makes a handy base for the town's 3.1 miles of uncrowded sand, where the city itself invites visitors to fish from shore. Pompano and Gulf whiting feed in the trough in spring and fall, redfish prowl the bar, and Spanish mackerel, bluefish and ladyfish arrive whenever bait packs along the beach; flounder and the odd speckled trout turn up close in during fall. Sand fleas or shrimp on a two-hook bottom rig take the trough fish, and a spoon takes the rest. Hurricane Michael destroyed the city pier, which is being rebuilt, so for now anglers fish the Gulf from the sand. Mexico Beach is a Leave No Trace town with no dogs on the beach; watch for rip currents, stingrays and afternoon storms.
