Jetty Park, Port Canaveral Fishing

Jetty Park, Port Canaveral is a Canaveral Port Authority park at the entrance to Port Canaveral, where a paved fishing pier runs out along the south jetty beside the ship channel. It combines deep, structured water with easy access and is a favorite with visiting families and local anglers alike.

Jetty Park is in the city of Cape Canaveral, at the north end of the beach at the entrance to Port Canaveral, off State Road 401 and George King Boulevard.

• Parking: day-use vehicle passes are sold online in advance, and the gate takes no cash or cards; campers enter with their reservation, and pedestrians and cyclists enter free during park hours.
• Hours: the park, beach and pier are open daily from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m.; registered campers can use the pier after hours.
• Capacity: when the park is full, entry waits for spaces to free up; a day pass bought for a set date guarantees entry.
• The fishing pier runs out along the south jetty at the northeast corner of the park, with parking close by.

The ship channel is a highway for bait, so the pier fishes all year.

• Spring (Mar-May): Snook and redfish along the rocks, Spanish mackerel and bluefish on their run, cobia occasionally near the channel.
• Summer (Jun-Aug): Snook at night, tarpon rolling in the channel, mangrove snapper and jacks around the rocks.
• Fall (Sep-Nov): The mullet run brings snook, redfish, jacks, bluefish and Spanish mackerel.
• Winter (Dec-Feb): Sheepshead and black drum along the jetty rocks, bluefish on cold fronts.

Medium-heavy tackle suits the channel, and the pier is the only place to fish.

• Snook and redfish: 20-40 lb braid with a 40-50 lb leader; live shrimp, pinfish or mullet, or 1/2-3/4 oz bucktails near the rocks.
• Sheepshead and black drum: Fiddler crabs, shrimp or clams on a 1/0 hook with a short leader and a 1-2 oz sinker straight down beside the rocks.
• Spanish mackerel and bluefish: Small spoons and Gotcha plugs with a bite leader.
• Rod and reel or pole only: cast nets, crab traps and similar gear are banned in the park.
• Bring a drop net; the pier deck sits well above the water.

Tides at Port Canaveral are semidiurnal, with two highs and two lows a day and a range of a few feet.

• The outgoing tide pulls bait out of the port and is best for snook and redfish.
• Slack and the start of the incoming are easiest for sheepshead and drum, when you can hold bottom.
• Cruise-ship and freighter wakes stir the water; fish often feed right after a big ship passes.
• A strong northeast wind makes the beach rough, while the pier stays fishable on the channel side.
• Clean water after a few calm days brings Spanish mackerel close.

Jetty Park is one of the more comfortable jetty spots in Florida, but the channel is a working port.

• Ship traffic: Cruise ships, freighters and military vessels create large wakes and strong wash; keep lines clear of the channel traffic.
• Rocks: Stay on the paved pier; the jetty rocks are off limits, and fishing from them is banned.
• Current: Swimming in the inlet or channel and jumping or diving from the pier are banned; the channel current is strong.
• Weather: Summer afternoon storms bring lightning; leave the pier early.
• Wildlife: Sharks follow the bait in the channel; handle any hooked shark in the water.
• Access: The paved pier is level; the park also lends beach wheelchairs free of charge.

Jetty Park is well equipped as a destination park.

• The park map shows a bait and tackle shop with a cafe by the boat ramp on the harbor side of the park; check its hours
• A camp store open to day visitors, with snacks, groceries and souvenirs, and food trucks at selected times
• Restrooms and changing rooms at the beachside pavilion, with more restrooms in the park
• A campground, rental picnic pavilions and a playground
• Lifeguards on the beach from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
• Free beach wheelchairs and mobility mats

• Buy your parking pass online before you leave home; you cannot pay at the gate for a day visit.
• Fish the corner where the pier meets the channel side on the outgoing tide for snook and reds.
• Watch the cruise-ship schedule: the wakes push bait around and often start a bite.
• In winter, sheepshead crowd the rocks; fiddler crabs are the best bait.
• Fish from the pier only: beach, shore and jetty-rock fishing are all banned in the park.
• Rocket launches from Cape Canaveral are visible from the park; expect crowds on launch days, when a dated day pass guarantees entry.

Jetty Park and its fishing pier are owned and managed by the Canaveral Port Authority.

• Fishing is allowed from the pier during park hours (registered campers around the clock); beach and shore fishing in the park and fishing from the jetty rocks are banned
