Cherie Down Park is Cape Canaveral's county beach park, a 7-acre neighborhood access on Ridgewood Avenue a little over a mile south of Jetty Park and the Port Canaveral inlet, and the county calls it a great place for surfing or surf fishing. A 320-foot boardwalk runs along the back of the dunes to two crossovers, one of them accessible, with a sheltered picnic spot at each end. From late fall into spring the surf gives pompano, whiting and bluefish; Spanish mackerel come through on the migrations, and snook, jacks, redfish and sharks follow the mullet in autumn. Sand fleas, clams or shrimp fished on the rising tide do most of the work. Parking is free and the park is open from dawn to dusk. County lifeguards have staffed a tower here in early summer, and launch days bring crowds of spectators.
