Alan Shepard Park is Cocoa Beach's five-acre oceanfront city park at the end of the Cocoa Beach Causeway (State Road 520), and the city calls surf fishing a popular Cocoa Beach tradition. Several dune crossovers lead from a 300-space lot to a wide Atlantic beach. Whiting and pompano are the core of the fishing, with bluefish and black drum in winter, Spanish mackerel on the spring and fall runs, and croaker, snook and jacks when the water is warm. Sand fleas, clams and shrimp in the first trough do most of the work. Tides run a few feet, twice a day. It is also a popular swimming beach, with a lifeguard tower staffed from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., so fish early, late or well away from swimmers. Parking is paid, and there are restrooms, showers and pavilions.
