Kiwanis Island Park is a large Brevard County park on Merritt Island, set in a wildlife sanctuary on Sykes Creek beside the SR 520 causeway, and the county notes that fishing is popular from its shoreline and its fishing dock. Sykes Creek is a sheltered, brackish arm of the Banana River system lined with mangroves and docks, and it holds snook, redfish, spotted seatrout and black drum, with sheepshead and mangrove snapper around structure and jacks and ladyfish in the warm months. Live shrimp, small live baits and soft plastics work best. The creek has almost no tide; wind and the time of day drive the bite. The park has restrooms, a two-lane boat ramp, pavilions, sports courts and a playground. Keep clear of the ramp, watch for manatees, and leave at the first thunder.
