Nicol Park is a shady Brevard County park on US 1 in Port St. John with 700 feet of shoreline set aside for fishing on the Indian River Lagoon, looking east across the water in a spot the county recommends for watching rocket launches. Anglers fish from the rock-edged bank for spotted seatrout, redfish and black drum, with sheepshead in winter and jacks, ladyfish and mangrove snapper in the warm months. Live shrimp under a cork or on a light bottom rig, and small soft plastics along the grass, cover most of it. The lagoon barely moves with the tide this far from an inlet, so wind and light decide the day. Parking is free, with restrooms, a drinking fountain, pavilions and a playground, and the county opens the park and restrooms after hours for scheduled launches. Summer lightning and slick rocks are the hazards.
