Fort Lauderdale Beach Fishing

5.7· Beach · Wilton Manors, FL

Fort Lauderdale Beach is the city's famous public beach, and its rules allow fishing on only one stretch of sand: between NE 18th and NE 23rd Streets, north of Hugh Taylor Birch State Park, and only during set daytime hours. Surf anglers work the trough there for pompano and whiting in the cooler months, bluefish, Spanish mackerel and blue runners when bait schools pass, and jacks and the odd snook cruising the shoreline in summer. The Atlantic has two tides a day, and the rising tide toward high water usually fishes the trough best, in clean, calm water. City fishing hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on weekdays and 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekends and national holidays. Keep well away from swimmers, pick up every hook and scrap of line, and watch for rip currents and lightning.
