Colee Hammock Park Fishing

6.2· Backwater · Fort Lauderdale, FL

Colee Hammock Park is a small, shady City of Fort Lauderdale park on the north bank of the New River, on Brickell Drive just south of Las Olas Boulevard. Fishing is one of the few amenities the city lists here, and from the bank anglers target snook, tarpon, crevalle jack and mangrove snapper, with sheepshead and black drum on the pilings in winter and ladyfish and catfish around for much of the year. The river rises and falls with the tide, and running water is what counts, the outgoing above all, around dawn and dusk; bait up with live shrimp or pilchards, or throw a small swimbait. Hours are 6 a.m. to 9 p.m., and there are picnic tables, though the city lists no restrooms. Watch for big yachts and their wakes, and note that a city rule forbids fishing from or under any bridge in Fort Lauderdale.
