George English Park Fishing

6.4· Backwater · Fort Lauderdale, FL

George English Park is a City of Fort Lauderdale park on the Middle River just north of Sunrise Boulevard, built around a boat-ramp basin that opens onto the river. The city lists fishing among its amenities, and the tip of the ramp peninsula, where the basin meets the river, puts you on moving water for snook, tarpon, crevalle jack and mangrove snapper, with sheepshead and black drum around structure in winter. The Middle River is tidal, so fish the moving water, especially the outgoing tide around dawn and dusk, with live shrimp, pilchards or small swimbaits. The park is open 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. and has restrooms, picnic tables, a pavilion and a canoe and kayak landing. Keep clear of the ramps and docks, and remember that city rules ban fishing from or under any bridge, including Sunrise Boulevard.
