Dames Point Park is a small City of Jacksonville park on the north bank of the St. Johns River, right under the north approach of the Dames Point Bridge. It is also the El Faro Memorial, with a statue honoring the crew of the Jacksonville-based cargo ship lost at sea in 2015, and it has a fishing pier on the river. Most anglers here catch croaker, redfish and black drum, with sheepshead on the pilings in the cooler months and trout and flounder in their seasons. Bottom baits of cut mullet or shrimp on a sinker heavy enough for the tide do most of the work. The city lists restrooms, a drinking fountain, picnic shelters, security lighting and wheelchair access. Watch the strong current and the wakes of passing ships, and treat the memorial with respect.
