Battery Park Gorrie Fishing Pier

6.9· Pier · Apalachicola, FL

Also called Dr. John Gorrie Observation and Fishing Pier

The Dr. John Gorrie Observation and Fishing Pier runs 350 feet along the Apalachicola River at Battery Park, beneath the John Gorrie Bridge at the entrance to Apalachicola, where the river meets Apalachicola Bay. Rebuilt after Hurricane Michael took out the old V-shaped pier and reopened with a ribbon cutting in July 2026, it is level and ADA-compliant, with bump-outs for wheelchair users and children. The mix of fresh river water and salty bay water feeds redfish and speckled trout, with sheepshead and black drum on structure, flounder in fall, and catfish and croaker on the bottom. Fish live shrimp or soft plastics along the bridge and marina edges on a moving tide. A second phase along the city marina has been proposed, so expect work nearby if it goes ahead. Watch for river current, boat traffic and lightning.
