St. George Island Fishing Pier (Old Bridge)

7.3· Bridge · Franklin County, FL

The St. George Island fishing pier is the island end of the original 1965 bridge to St. George Island, left in place when the new bridge opened in 2004 and kept as a public fishing pier over Apalachicola Bay. The long span crosses deeper channels and oyster bars, so it holds redfish, speckled trout, black drum, sheepshead and flounder, with Spanish mackerel, bluefish and tripletail in the warm months and sharks at night. Fish the moving tide along the pilings with live shrimp, fiddler crabs and jigs. There is a parking area at the foot of the pier on the island side; a matching pier stands at the Eastpoint end. Hazards are strong current, lightning over the open bay and sun, and you will need a drop net for big fish.
