Pendarvis Cove Park Fishing

Pendarvis Cove Park is a quiet Martin County launch park on the South Fork of the St. Lucie River, and fishing is on the county's list of things to do there. Expect a river edge and a short dock rather than a big destination pier.

The South Fork is brackish, and its fish follow the salt: plenty when the water is clear and salty, far fewer after big freshwater flows.

• Spring (Mar-May): snook move up the river, jacks and ladyfish arrive, and the last sheepshead hang on the pilings
• Summer (Jun-Aug): snook early and late in the day, mangrove snapper under the dock, tarpon rolling out in the river
• Fall (Sep-Nov): the mullet run pulls snook, tarpon and jacks along the banks after the bait
• Winter (Dec-Feb): sheepshead and black drum around the dock; snook go quiet in cold snaps

Light to medium spinning gear covers most of it; the fish hold tight to the dock and the mangrove edges.

• Snook: a medium spinning outfit spooled with 20-30 lb braid, a 30-40 lb fluorocarbon leader and a 2/0 circle hook for a live shrimp, pilchard or finger mullet, or a soft plastic crawled slowly past the edges

• Sheepshead and black drum: fiddler crabs or shrimp on a short leader right against the pilings
• Jacks and ladyfish: small bucktails, spoons and topwater plugs when bait is showing

Twice-daily Atlantic tides work up the river from the St. Lucie Inlet, but by the time they reach the South Fork at Palm City the rise and fall is small, and rainfall and freshwater releases often matter as much as the tide.

• A dry spell lets clear, salty water push up the South Fork, and the saltwater fish follow it
• Heavy rain and releases from upstream turn the river dark and fresh and push the fish downriver

This is an easy, sheltered spot, but the river has its own hazards.

• Share the dock and ramp with paddlers launching and landing, and keep your lines clear of them
• The St. Lucie River has had blue-green algae blooms in some summers; if the water looks green and scummy or a health advisory is posted, don't fish or touch the water
• Manatees use the river; never cast at them and take all line home
• Lightning builds fast on summer afternoons; leave the dock at the first thunder
• Accessibility: the county lists the park as ADA accessible
• Bring water, sun protection and insect repellent for still evenings

Pendarvis Cove Park is simple, with the basics for a few hours on the river.

• Take all line and hooks home; manatees and wading birds use the river
