Shepard Park, Stuart Fishing

6.4· Backwater · Stuart, FL

Shepard Park is a tree-lined City of Stuart park on the St. Lucie River where Frazier Creek meets it beside US 1, with a fishing dock, a boat launch and a riverwalk boardwalk over the water. It is a handy place to fish the St. Lucie estuary: snook are the main attraction, especially early and late in the day, with jacks, ladyfish, mangrove snapper and the odd tarpon in the warm months and sheepshead and black drum in winter. Moving water is best, and clear, salty water fishes far better than the dark runoff after heavy rain. The city opens the park from sunrise to sunset, and there are accessible restrooms, a pavilion, grills and a playground. Keep clear of the boat launch, watch for summer storms and check water-quality advisories before you go.
