Deering Estate People's Dock, Cutler Fishing

Deering Estate People's Dock is a quiet public dock on the mangrove edge of southern Biscayne Bay, inside one of the county's most scenic preserves. It is a place for a relaxed morning of light-tackle fishing, not a crowded pier.

The dock belongs to the Deering Estate, a Miami-Dade County park at 16701 SW 72 Avenue in Cutler (Palmetto Bay). You walk to it from the visitor center on the estate's paths.

• Hours: sunrise to sunset, every day except Thanksgiving and Christmas
• Fees: the estate may charge for entry or parking; check its page before you go
• Walk: stay on the designated pathways to reach the dock
• The dock may be closed at times without notice, so check ahead on busy event days

Southern Biscayne Bay is warm for most of the year, so the mix changes less than on Florida's cooler coasts.

• Spring (Mar-May): mangrove snapper, jacks and barracuda move along the shoreline with the bait
• Summer (Jun-Aug): snapper at their best, with snook and the odd tarpon at dawn and dusk
• Fall (Sep-Nov): mullet and baitfish bring jacks, ladyfish and snook close to the mangroves
• Winter (Dec-Feb): sheepshead, seatrout and snapper on calm, clear days

Light spinning tackle is plenty here, and the water is shallow and clear enough that fish see a heavy leader.

• Mangrove snapper: small live shrimp on a light knocker rig, or cut bait on a 1/0 hook
• Snook and barracuda: live pilchards or a small swimbait or plug at first light
• Jacks: a spoon or jig retrieved fast along the edge
• Sheepshead: shrimp or fiddler crabs dropped near any pilings
• Cast nets are not mentioned in the estate's rules; ask a ranger before throwing one

Biscayne Bay has two highs and two lows a day, with a gentle current on this side of the bay.

• Moving water, either tide, fishes better than slack
• A rising tide pushes baitfish into the mangroves and snapper follow
• Early morning and the last hour of light are best in summer, before the heat
• Strong east winds muddy the water; calm days give clear water for sight-fishing
• Check a NOAA tide station for Biscayne Bay before you go

The dock is part of a nature preserve, so expect a walk and few services.

• Mosquitoes and no-see-ums are bad at dusk; bring repellent
• Sun and heat are strong; carry water and a hat
• Leave the dock at the first thunder of a summer storm
• Barracuda and snapper have sharp teeth; use pliers
• Access: a walk on the estate's paths from the visitor center; check the estate for details if you use a wheelchair

Facilities are those of a county heritage park, not a fishing pier.

• No bait shop at the dock that we could confirm; bring bait
• Food and other services: check the estate before you go

• Fish at first light; the dock opens at sunrise and the water is calm
• Bring live shrimp; the nearest confirmed bait shop is not at the dock
• Stay on the paths; the estate asks visitors not to pick plants or climb trees
• Do not plan to clean or fillet fish on site; the estate does not allow it
• Leave the estate's other shoreline alone; fishing is only invited at this dock
• Check the estate's event calendar, since weddings and tours can crowd the grounds

The Deering Estate is managed by Miami-Dade County.

• Fishing is invited at People's Dock only, not on the rest of the grounds
• Guests must follow all local, state and federal laws, including saltwater fishing rules
• Swimming, diving, snorkeling and spearfishing are not allowed; cleaning and filleting on site is not allowed

• A Florida saltwater fishing license is required unless you are exempt
