Oceanfront Park is a free, 7.94-acre City of Marathon park behind City Hall, between 98th and 99th Streets on the ocean side of US 1, and the city describes it as a place to picnic, fish and launch a kayak. The open field runs down to the Atlantic shore, where a boat channel runs close in with shallow grass flats beyond. Mangrove snapper, barracuda, jacks and stingrays are the regulars, with the chance of a snook or a small tarpon in low light. Fish the moving tide early or late in the day; tides here come twice a day. The park is open from 8 a.m. to dusk, with ample parking, a dog park and a kayak launch with floating docks on the canal. No restrooms or bait are listed, so come prepared. Boat traffic in the channel, heat and summer lightning are the hazards.
