Fishing in Okaloosa County
Summary
Okaloosa County holds the western half of the Emerald Coast: Okaloosa Island at Fort Walton Beach, the Destin East Pass where Choctawhatchee Bay meets the Gulf, and the beaches of Destin and Holiday Isle. Clear green water, deep water close to shore and a busy inlet make it one of the Panhandle's best shore-fishing counties. The Okaloosa Island Pier reaches king mackerel, cobia and Spanish mackerel, the east jetty at East Pass holds redfish, sheepshead, black drum and flounder all year, and the bays and bayous behind the island suit trout and reds. Much of the land between Fort Walton Beach and Destin belongs to Eglin Air Force Base and is closed or needs a permit, including the west jetty of East Pass. The county is on Central Time.

|---|---|---|
| Spring (Mar–May) | Cobia, pompano, Spanish mackerel, sheepshead, bluefish | Sheepshead peak on the jetty; cobia along the beach in April |
| Summer (Jun–Aug) | King mackerel, Spanish mackerel, little tunny, mangrove snapper, ladyfish | Pier kings; mackerel on the outgoing tide at East Pass |

| Winter (Dec–Feb) | Sheepshead, black drum, redfish, trout, whiting | Jetty rocks and bay holes on mild days |
Methods & Tackle
- Pier: spoons and gotcha plugs for Spanish mackerel; live hardtails or cigar minnows on stinger rigs for kings
- Jetty: fiddler crabs and shrimp for sheepshead; knocker rigs with shrimp or crab for reds and drum; Carolina rigs for flounder
- Surf: double-drop rigs with sand fleas or shrimp for pompano and whiting
- Bay: live shrimp under a cork, soft plastics and topwaters for trout and reds
- Fish 20–30 lb braid and 30–40 lb leader on the rocks; bring a net or rope gaff
Tides and Conditions
- Gulf tides are small and often once a day, but East Pass funnels all of Choctawhatchee Bay, so current there is strong
- The outgoing tide at East Pass is prime for mackerel and reds; slack water suits sheepshead and flounder
- Clean, green water on a light onshore breeze brings kings and cobia to the pier
- Rough south winds against an outgoing tide make the jetty tip dangerous
- Heavy rain dirties the bay and pass for days
Safety & Access
- The East Pass jetty is large, slick boulders with deep gaps; never go alone and stay off it in rough seas
- East Pass carries very heavy boat traffic; keep lines clear
- Rip currents are common on Okaloosa Island and Destin beaches
- Summer lightning: leave piers, jetties and beaches at the first thunder
- Eglin AFB land is closed or permit-only; obey the signs
- The Okaloosa Island Pier is level and suits wheelchairs; the jetty does not
Tips
- The pier's daily pass includes a license, handy for visitors
- Sheepshead stack up on the East Pass rocks from February to April
- Fish the outgoing tide at East Pass for Spanish mackerel and reds
- Norriego Point parking is paid and fills early; go on weekday mornings
- In April, watch for cobia under the pier rails
- Catch hardtails on a sabiki at dawn for king bait
- On windy Gulf days, try the bay shore and bayous for trout
