James Lee Park Fishing

6.7· Beach · Destin, FL

James Lee Park is Okaloosa County's Gulf beach park in Destin, on Scenic Highway 98 near the Walton County line, with 170 parking spaces, pavilions, restrooms and several access points onto the sand. The county lists fishing among the park's uses, and it is a classic Panhandle surf spot: pompano and Gulf whiting on sand fleas and shrimp in spring and fall, Spanish mackerel, bluefish, ladyfish and blue runners chasing bait along the bar in the warm months, and redfish and black drum as the water cools. Fish the trough between the beach and the first sandbar with a two-hook pompano rig, or throw spoons when bait is showing. The county's tourism office calls March to November prime surf fishing time. Fish early or late, well clear of swimmers, and heed the beach flags and rip currents.
