Fort Walton Beach Landing Fishing

6.2· Pier · Cinco Bayou, FL

The Fort Walton Beach Landing is the city's downtown waterfront park, set on Santa Rosa Sound less than half a mile west of the Brooks Bridge, with about 700 feet of shoreline, a boardwalk, a fishing pier, restrooms and a playground. The pier and boardwalk are productive for speckled trout, redfish and flounder over the grass and sand; sheepshead gather on the pilings in late winter and spring, white trout show up when the water cools, and Spanish mackerel, ladyfish and bluefish chase the bait that moves through in summer. A cork with live shrimp under it, a small jig or a fiddler crab on a moving tide, early or late in the day, covers most of it. Hours are sunrise to 9 p.m. The Landing doubles as the city's event space, so concert nights bring crowds; Brooks Bridge construction traffic nearby and summer lightning are the other hazards.
