Gulfstream Park, Gulf Stream Fishing

Gulfstream Park is a small county beach park on the quiet stretch of A1A between Boynton Beach and Delray Beach. It gives free access to a stretch of south county beach away from the busier inlets and piers.

• Pompano, whiting and bluefish in the cooler months; snook, jacks and mackerel with the bait
• A short walk from the lot to the sand
• Fishing is not allowed inside the guarded swimming area

The park is at 4489 North Ocean Boulevard (A1A), Gulf Stream, north of Delray Beach. Palm Beach County Parks and Recreation runs it.

• Getting there: follow A1A along the coast between Boynton Beach and Delray Beach to 4489 North Ocean Boulevard
• Entry and parking: free; the county charges beach parking fees only at two other parks
• Hours: sunrise to sunset
• Size: just over six acres; arrive early on weekends
• The walk: short, from the lot to the beach
• Surface: soft sand

This stretch of coast sees the same seasonal migrations as the rest of Palm Beach County.

• Spring (Mar-May): pompano and bluefish finish their run, Spanish mackerel pass, and snook move onto the beaches
• Summer (Jun-Aug): snook in the wash at dawn, jacks and blue runners, and whiting in the troughs
• Fall (Sep-Nov): the mullet run brings snook, tarpon, jacks and bluefish tight to the beach
• Winter (Dec-Feb): pompano and whiting in the troughs, bluefish and Spanish mackerel after cold fronts

A 10 to 12 foot surf rod for bait and a medium spinning rod for lures cover this beach.

• Pompano and whiting: a double-drop rig with sand fleas, clam or shrimp on 1/0 hooks and a 3 to 5 oz pyramid sinker in the first trough
• Pompano jigs: small yellow or pink jigs bounced along the bottom on a rising tide
• Snook: a white bucktail, a paddle-tail swimbait or a live mullet along the wash at first light
• Bluefish and Spanish mackerel: silver spoons and small plugs when bait sprays
• A sand spike and a small cart make the walk across the sand easier

Gulf Stream has two Atlantic tides a day. The beach fishes best in clean, green water with a little movement.

• A rising tide into high water is usually best for pompano and whiting
• Snook and jacks feed along the wash at dawn and dusk
• A light swell stirs up sand fleas; a heavy swell or stirred-up brown water fishes poorly
• Northeast winds in fall push mullet down the beach, with predators behind them
• In winter, fish the clearing water a day or two after a cold front

The swimming area is guarded, but conditions can change quickly on this open coast.

• Rip currents form along the beach; cast from the sand rather than wading in
• Stay well outside the flagged swimming area and away from surfers
• Leave the beach at the first sign of summer lightning
• Stingrays lie in the shallows, so land fish on the beach without stepping in, and watch for Portuguese man o' war after onshore winds
• There is no shade on the sand; carry water and sun protection
• Access: a short walk leads to soft sand; there is no beach mat or surf wheelchair here that we could confirm

Facilities are simple but cover the basics.

• Restrooms and outdoor showers
• Picnic areas with grills
• A playground
• No bait shop or food in the park that we could confirm; bring bait, food and water
• No lights for night fishing; the park closes at sunset
• The nearest tackle and bait are in the surrounding towns; check that a shop is open before you rely on it

• Set up well north or south of the lifeguard tower, where the beach is usually empty early
• Bring fresh sand fleas or clams for pompano; the county's park rules do not allow bait digging on this beach
• Watch the birds; diving terns and pelicans give away passing bluefish and mackerel
• The Boynton Inlet is a few miles north if you want to try an inlet on the same trip
• Fish the first light hours in summer before the heat and the crowds build

Gulfstream Park is managed by Palm Beach County Parks and Recreation.

• The park is open sunrise to sunset
• Saltwater fishing and surfing are not permitted in the guarded swimming areas
• County code lets people swim or wade only in designated areas, so stay on the beach to fish rather than standing in the water
• Dogs are not allowed on county beaches (service animals excepted), and balloons are prohibited in the park
• A Florida saltwater fishing license is required unless you are exempt
• Shark fishing and chumming are banned under county code on county beaches with guarded swim areas, and this park's beach is guarded
• The same code prohibits taking any animal from park property except fish caught where fishing is permitted, which rules out digging sand fleas
• Snook and tarpon have their own seasons and release rules; check FWC before keeping a snook
• Check current FWC rules for size, bag and season limits before keeping anything
