Lantana Municipal Beach Park Fishing

Lantana Municipal Beach Park is a short town beach where the fishing happens at the edges of the day. Rocks at the shoreline and a shifting reef offshore give fish a reason to come close.

The park is at 100 North Ocean Boulevard (A1A) at the east end of Ocean Avenue, reached over the Lantana bridge, and the Town of Lantana runs it.

Structure makes a small beach fish above its size.

• Spring (Mar-May): snook settle around the shoreline rocks, and Spanish mackerel and blue runners pass on bait
• Summer (Jun-Aug): snook in the first hours after sunrise, jacks chasing bait, and mangrove snapper near the rocks on calm mornings
• Fall (Sep-Nov): the mullet run brings snook, jacks, bluefish and the odd tarpon close in
• Winter (Dec-Feb): pompano and whiting on the sand, sheepshead grazing the rocks, and bluefish after cold fronts

Short sessions reward a simple, ready-rigged outfit.

• Snook: a white bucktail, a soft jerkbait or a live shrimp worked beside the rocks after sunrise on 30 lb fluorocarbon
• Sheepshead and snapper: a small, strong hook with shrimp or fiddler crab, dropped close to the rocks with light weight
• Pompano and whiting: a pompano rig with a 2 to 3 oz pyramid sinker cast to the sand away from the rocks, baited with bought sand fleas or clam
• Jacks, bluefish and mackerel: a spoon or jig thrown at bait on the move
• Rig at home so no fishing minutes are lost on the beach

The ocean here has two highs and two lows a day; NOAA's Lake Worth Pier station, a couple of miles north, predicts ranges of roughly 2 to 3.5 feet.

• Match the tide to the legal window: a rising tide at sunrise is the best combination
• The town notes challenging surf in refraction swells, cold fronts and hurricanes; on those days the rocks are dangerous and the surf is hard to fish
• Calm, clear mornings are best for snook and sheepshead near the rocks
• Winter fronts bring pompano and bluefish once the surf settles
• The reef shifts with storms, so re-learn the bottom after a blow

The park is guarded by day, but the surf here has a reputation.

• Lifeguards staff the towers every day from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; follow their directions
• The morning fishing window often runs past 9 a.m., so keep well clear of swimmers once the guards are on duty
• Surfers use this beach, and swimmers must stay within 50 yards of shore; keep casts clear of both
• The shoreline rocks are slick; do not stand on them in waves
• Rip currents form in rough swells; never wade out after a snag
• Lightning: leave the beach at the first thunder
• Access: paved lots, restrooms and a boardwalk close to the sand

Lantana Municipal Beach Park is run by the Town of Lantana, and its code is specific about fishing.

• Fishing or casting from the beach is banned from three hours after sunrise until one hour before sunset
• Town parks are open only from sunrise to sunset, so the legal windows are sunrise to three hours after it, and the last hour before sunset
• Spearguns and similar gear are banned on the beach and in its waters
• No alcohol in the park
• A Florida saltwater fishing license is required unless you are exempt
