Fred Howard Park Fishing

Fred Howard Park is a county park in Tarpon Springs with a mile-long causeway running out across grass flats to a small Gulf beach island. The county's park map shows fishing along both sides of the causeway between its two small bridges and at the north and south ends of the beach island, outside the swimming area, and county rules allow wading only in designated areas, so this is shore casting rather than wading. The clear, shallow water holds spotted seatrout, redfish and snook, with sheepshead and black drum around rocks in winter and Spanish mackerel and cobia passing in spring. Fish the first of the incoming tide with live shrimp under a cork or a soft plastic. The park opens at 7 a.m. and closes at sunset, with paid parking, restrooms and beach showers. Watch for cars and bikes on the causeway.
