Nokomis Community Park Fishing

5.8· Backwater · Venice, FL

Nokomis Community Park is a Sarasota County recreation park in Nokomis with a small fishing pier and a kayak launch on tidal Curry Creek, which winds out to Roberts Bay near the Venice Inlet. It is a quiet creek spot rather than a big-water one: snook use the creek's deeper, darker water, especially when cold fronts chill the bay, crevalle jacks and juvenile tarpon push up it in the warm months, and mangrove snapper, redfish, black drum and sheepshead hold around the shoreline and any structure. Fish the moving tide, particularly a falling tide that pulls bait out of the creek. The park has restrooms, picnic shelters, grills and a playground and is open 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. Keep an eye on the water's edge for manatees and alligators.
