Pocono Trail Preserve, Nokomis Fishing

Pocono Trail Preserve is a quiet 8-acre county preserve in Nokomis with a listed fishing pier near the mangrove edge of Shakett Creek and Dona Bay. It suits an angler who likes a peaceful, shaded walk to the water more than a busy pier scene.

The preserve is at Pocono Trail in Nokomis, on the east side of Shakett Creek, just off the Tamiami Trail. Sarasota County runs it as a natural area.

• The walk: unpaved and paved trails lead from the street to the water; most are described as easy
• Hours and fees: not confirmed, so check the county parks page and any posted signs

The creek is brackish, so fresh rain pushes some fish downstream and a dry spell brings the salt fish in.

• Spring (Mar-May): snook and seatrout move into the creek mouth as the water warms
• Summer (Jun-Aug): mangrove snapper, snook and jacks around the shade at dawn and dusk
• Fall (Sep-Nov): redfish and mullet push through, with ladyfish on the tide
• Winter (Dec-Feb): sheepshead and black drum on the structure, and seatrout on calm, mild days

Light spinning gear with 10 lb line and a 20 lb fluorocarbon leader fits this sheltered water.

• Snook and redfish: live shrimp or a pilchard, or a small paddletail on a 1/4 oz jig head along the mangrove edge
• Seatrout: a live shrimp under a popping cork over any grass or sandy patch
• Sheepshead and black drum: a small hook with fiddler crab or a piece of shrimp on the bottom near the pilings
• Snapper: small shrimp on a knocker rig, kept close to cover

Shakett Creek rises and falls with two uneven highs and lows a day, tied to the Gulf tides through Dona Bay and Little Sarasota Bay. Check the nearest NOAA station for times.

• Moving water, especially the first half of an outgoing tide, is best
• Low light in the morning and evening beats the midday sun
• After heavy rain the water runs stained and fresher for a few days
• A light breeze keeps the bugs down; summer afternoons bring storms

This is a natural area, not a developed fishing park, so expect uneven ground.

• Watch your footing near the water and keep children close
• Parking is tight and street parking is tied to the right-of-way, so park where it is clearly allowed

Pocono Trail Preserve is managed by Sarasota County. The county's visitor pages list a fishing pier, but we did not find the county's own fishing rules for the preserve, so read the posted signs.
