Frank Butler Park West Fishing

6.5· Backwater · St. Augustine Beach, FL

Frank Butler Park West is a St. Johns County park and boat ramp on the Matanzas River, the Intracoastal Waterway behind Butler Beach south of St. Augustine. It is a handy, low-key spot to fish the river shoreline beside the ramp for redfish, seatrout, flounder, black drum and sheepshead, with the river's oyster bars and grass edges close by. Fish live shrimp under a popping cork, or mud minnows and cut bait on the bottom, on the moving tide. The park is open from dawn to dusk, with restrooms, picnic pavilions and plenty of parking, and the beach half of the park is just across A1A. Keep clear of the launch lanes, watch the oyster shell, and leave early when summer storms build.
