Fee to fish: Reserve parking fee per vehicle, or lower for walk-ins (checked Sep 27, 2026)

The Guana River Dam is the fishing area of the Guana Tolomato Matanzas National Estuarine Research Reserve, north of St. Augustine, where the dam separates Guana Lake from the tidal Guana River. The FWC names redfish, seatrout, croaker, black drum and spot as the catch here, and anglers fish from the dam and the banks around it, with flounder in summer and fall, sheepshead near the structure in the cooler months and jacks and ladyfish in summer. Live shrimp under a popping cork, or shrimp and mud minnows on the bottom, work best on moving water. The use area opens daily for fishing from 4 a.m. to 9 p.m. with a small parking fee, and there are two small boat ramps, trails and a kayak concession at the dam. The river side turns to mudflats at low tide, and ticks and biting insects are heavy from spring into summer.
