South Ponte Vedra Park Fishing

6.2· Beach · St. Johns County, FL

Also called South Ponte Vedra Recreation Area

South Ponte Vedra Park is a small St. Johns County beach park on South Ponte Vedra Boulevard (A1A), the northernmost county lot between Vilano Beach and the reserve's beach lots. The lot sits on the ocean side of the road, so there is no highway to cross: take the stepped walkover or the sandy south footpath straight onto a long surf beach with open dunes to the north. Whiting and pompano are the regular catch on shrimp, clams and sand fleas, bluefish and Spanish mackerel run through in spring and fall, and redfish and black drum take cut mullet and crab in the cooler months. Tides turn twice a day over several feet. The park is open dawn to dusk with restrooms, a pavilion and picnic tables, but only about two dozen spaces. Shark fishing and chumming are banned; rips and lightning are the hazards.
