Mary McLeod Bethune Beach Park Fishing

6.9· Pier · Oak Hill, FL

Free: No entry fee; non-residents pay to park (checked Sep 27, 2026)

Mary McLeod Bethune Beach Park is a two-sided Volusia County park south of New Smyrna Beach, one mile north of the Apollo Beach entrance to Canaveral National Seashore. Its riverside half has a fishing pier on the Indian River lagoon, and across South Atlantic Avenue its beachfront half opens onto a quiet stretch of Atlantic surf. From the pier, fish shrimp or a popping cork for spotted seatrout, redfish, black drum and winter sheepshead; on the beach, sand fleas and shrimp on a two-hook rig bring whiting, pompano and bluefish, best on a moving tide. The lagoon has only a small tide, while the surf follows the Atlantic's two tides a day. Both sides have restrooms, the beach side has showers and pavilions, and county lots charge a daily parking fee. Rip currents on the beach and summer lightning are the main hazards.
