John B. Gore Park Fishing

John B. Gore Park is a City of Callaway park on Callaway Bayou, with a two-slip boat ramp onto East Bay and a separate floating dock set aside for fishing. The bayou holds the usual St. Andrew Bay backwater fish: speckled trout and redfish along the edges, flounder and black drum on the bottom, sheepshead around the docks in late winter and spring, and croaker, white trout and catfish in the cooler months. Fish live shrimp under a popping cork or on a light jig head, and mud minnows on a Carolina rig for flounder. The park is open daily from 7 a.m. to dusk and also holds the Callaway Community Center, a museum, a one-room schoolhouse and sports fields, with restrooms in the concession building. Tides are small, so wind and moving water matter; keep clear of the ramp and leave at the first thunder.
