The Withlacoochee Bay Trail is a free, paved Cross Florida Greenway trail that runs west from Felburn Park at US 19, near Inglis, along the south bank of the old Cross Florida Barge Canal toward the Gulf. Along its first stretch, beside the brackish, tidal canal, several multi-use platforms are set out for picnicking or fishing. The dredged channel holds redfish, spotted seatrout, sheepshead and black drum, with snook seeking the deeper water in winter and mangrove snapper, jacks and ladyfish in summer. Shrimp on a jighead or on the bottom, and cut bait for the bigger fish, cover most of it. Fish the moving tide. Felburn Park, the trailhead, has paved parking, potable water and picnic pavilions, and the Greenway is open from 8 a.m. to sunset. Watch for summer lightning, heat on the open trail, cyclists and a steep, slippery bank.
