Withlacoochee Gulf Preserve is a free, 413-acre Town of Yankeetown preserve of salt marsh, tidal ponds and hammock near the mouth of the Withlacoochee River. It is a quiet backwater spot rather than a destination pier: anglers fish from the dock on Helverson Creek at the end of the Oak Hammock (Fishing Pier) Trail, from the salt pond bridge, or launch a kayak into the creeks toward the Gulf. Redfish, spotted seatrout, sheepshead and black drum are the main catches, with snook and jacks in the warm months. Live shrimp on a light jighead or under a cork is the simple approach; fish the moving tide, as the creeks drain to mud at low water. The preserve is open daily from dawn to dusk, with portable toilets and an observation tower. Bring bug spray and watch for summer lightning.
